basically just put K and me and NisiOisiN and ZUN in the same room
because i'm pretentious and rude and somehow there's a lot more here than i thought i would ever need to explain so here are explanations so it's not CHIZU LAUGHING ALONE WITH K
1. 八雲 ゆうと yakumo yuuto & ゆう yuu
2. daylightrevelation & only revelations of ruin
1. 八雲 ゆうと yakumo yuuto & ゆう yuu
八雲 is yukari's family name, and he's pilfered it for himself—a reminder of who he is now; though yukari bestowed it upon him too, he would have taken it for himself even if she hadn't. it's a reminder that he's a youkai now, that he isn't human anymore.
ゆうと is yuuto - it's written in hiragana specifically to be vague about the kanji. firstly, damian picked a name that started with yu because a popular trend of naming siblings is to make their names related to each other. generally this would be by character or theme but damian's not actually particular enough to try and suss out an appropriate name from 'yukari'/'violet'. besides, if you write both names in hiragana they share the same first character anyway. he creates this relation because they're similar youkai - the only two of their kind in the world. for all that she's done and for all that he finds her annoying, he thinks they're cut from the same cloth, especially after he becomes a youkai, and creates solidarity through this.
the following are ways to write yuuto in kanji; note that damian, at some point or another, pretty much uses all of these someway, somehow. he doesn't stick to one written kanji because he thinks they're all appropriate. bolded are the written ways he uses the most.優斗 - superiority/gentleness + the Ursa Major constellation/the Big Dipper.when around youkai, he would most likely use 優斗 - indicating that he is a superior person, a person of high quality, the best of the best. in shinto, the seven major stars of the Ursa Major constellation belong to the oldest and most powerful god - in other words, he's lording it over as completely superior and incredibly powerful. in youkai mythology, the Ursa Major is also the great Celestial Dragon which will devour the North Star—the Hokuto—so it remains that he would be Incredibly Powerful. it's a little hilariously accidental nod to his fears and what he'd become.
悠斗 - distant/far away/leisurely + the Ursa Major constellation/the Big Dipper.
悠人 - distant/far away/leisurely + person/human.
悠翔 - distant/far away/leisurely + to soar/to fly.
優翔 - superiority/gentleness + to soar/to fly.
if he were to ever write his name around his family in gotham, it would be with 優翔. again, an indication that he is superior, also referring to his previous role as robin - he's the superior robin, superior to all his predecessors and cohorts.
neither of those written translations are why he chose the name yuuto. he chooses it - and he does not speak of this to anyone; it's a secret guarded deeply in his heart - for 悠翔. it refers to robin, and his family in gotham, and the distance between them. he carries this name with him, to remember them, so that he might never forget where he came from and who he was, even if he's a yakumo now.
悠人 is used primarily when he's around humans in gensokyo - he refers to himself mostly as yuu, and not yuuto, but if he had to write it it would be this way. when he's around humans in gensokyo, he's pretending to be one of them - when in reality, he's not. he keeps his distance; that's the sort of person he is. this name is one he chose for himself incredibly early on, while he was still incredibly newly minted - he doesn't want to forget his humanity, and clings onto it in his name. incidentally, 悠 can also mean leisurely, which is how he presents himself when he's around humans—he's lazy, an at-your-pace sort of person.
every one of the characters used to write his name are references to dick grayson. 悠翔 in particular is a direct reference to dick, the acrobat who soars and flies, the one who he wants to remember the most, the one who he never wants to forget, who's the furthest away from him now. furthest, because now he's become something he's certain even grayson would reject, something so completely out of place and far away that he can't reach him now. 優 can mean 'gentleness' - something he remembers dick for, but it also means 'a person with lithe/graceful movements' (referring to his acrobatics) and 'actor' (referring more to damian's role, but also a nod to dick grayson as a performer). 人 refers to the aspect that he desperately wants to keep, his humanity, and that was something he lost when he was raised by his mother; it's something that grayson brought back, and it's something he fought to keep and eventually lost. in 斗, the Ursa Major constellations, the big dipper has the north star 北斗 - hokuto, the name that dick grayson went by in the Forest. in every name he chooses, he carries grayson with him.
incidentally, referring back to the thing about siblings sharing characters—yuuto composes of both YUkari and hokuTO. removing both YU and TO from his name leaves behind う U, which can be read for 鵜—cormorant, which is a type of bird. it also means 'glutton', or 'greedy'. it can also be read for 胡—foolish, reckless.
damian doesn't ever refer to the 優 of his name as 'gentleness' - but people have probably teased him about it. (looking @ you, yukari)
2. daylightrevelation & only revelations of ruin
daylightrevelation refers to the florence + the machine song, No Light, No Light. it also refers to the Book of Revelations - the book that prophecies the second coming of Jesus Christ, though here it's loosely related, broken down to being 'the time when the world is saved again'.
here, one might say that damian is the second savior of the world - yukari being the first, the one who 'saved' all of the youkai with the creation of gensokyo. the one who brings about paradise the first time around. damian considers himself to be the one who will save the 'world' a second time - specifically, gotham. when he returns from gensokyo he returns with the mission of eliminating crime, making gotham truly a safe place to live, along with his other mission of returning grayson and drake both to humanity.
in reference to the song -You want a revelation, the revelation he brings about, it will be violent. a daylight (violent) revelation, with bloodshed. this revelation, he believes, will be the resolution.
You want to get it right
But, it's a conversation,
I just can't have tonight
You want a revelation, some kind of resolution
You want a revelation
No light, no light in your bright blue eyes
I never knew daylight could be so violent
A revelation in the light of day,
You can't choose what stays and what fades away
And I'll do anything to make you stay
it's going to be violent. it's going to be bloody. many will die. but this is what he's decided is necessary, in order to bring about peace. it's a revelation and a revolution and a resolution.
only revelations of ruin refers to the book by Mark Z. Danielewski, Only Revolutions - particularly, the poem linked. because i'm pretentious and because damian is pretentious, he considers himself something that requires someone - specifically, dick grayson, specifically, yukari yakumo. without them, he's unwanted, unsafe, will destroy everything. without them, he's only revelations - violent revelations - of ruin. they give him direction, and without them, everything he does might as well be for naught.
(the joke, also, is that he's 16 now.)
3. 蠱 gu: Work on what has been spoiled (Decay) | Above Ken Keeping Still, Mountain / Below Sun the Gentle, Wind蠱 (gu) is an i-ching hexagram that damian wears on his clothes. instead of trying to explain the meaning i'll just copypaste from i-ching fortune the lines and what they represent.Introduction
The Chinese character ku represents a bowl in whose contents worms are breeding. This means decay. It is come about because the gentle indifference in the lower trigram has come together with the rigid inertia of the upper, and the result is stagnation. Since this implies guilt, the conditions embody a demand for removal of the cause. Hence the meaning of the hexagram is not simply 'what has been spoiled' but 'work on what has been spoiled'.
The Lines
Six in the beginning means: Setting right what has been spoiled by the father. If there is a son, No blame rests upon the departed father. Danger. In the end good fortune.
Rigid adherence to tradition has resulted in decay. But the decay has not yet penetrated deeply and so can still be easily remedied. It is as if a son were compensated for the decay his father allowed to creep in. Then no blame attaches to the father. However, one must not overlook the danger or take the matter too lightly. Only if one is conscious of the danger connected with every reform will everything go well in the end.
Nine in the second place means: Setting right what has been spoiled by the mother. One must not be too persevering.
This refers to mistakes that as a result of weakness have brought about decay-hence the symbol, 'what has been spoiled by the mother. ' In setting things right in such a case, a certain gentle consideration is called for. In order not to wound, one should not attempt to proceed too drastically.
Nine in the third place means: Setting right what has been spoiled by the father. There will be a little remorse. No great blame.
This describes a man who proceeds a little too energetically in righting the mistakes of the past. Now and then, as a result, minor discourse and annoyances will surely develop. But too much energy is better than too little. Therefore, although he may at times have slight cause for regret, he remains free of any serious blame.
Six in the fourth place means: Tolerating what has been spoiled by the father. In continuing one sees humiliation.
This shows the situation of someone too weak to take measures against decay that has its roots in the past and is just beginning to manifest itself. It is allowed to run its course. If this continues, humiliation will result.
Six in the fifth place means: Setting right what has been spoiled by the father. One meets with praise.
An individual is confronted with corruption originating from neglect in former times. He lacks the power to ward it off alone, but with able helpers he can at least bring about a thorough reform, if he cannot create a new beginning, and this also is praiseworthy.
Nine at the top means: He does not serve kings and princes. Sets himself higher goals.
Not every man has an obligation to mingle in the affairs of the world. There are some who are developed to such a degree that they are justified in letting the world go its own way and refusing to enter public life with a view to reforming it. But this does not imply a right to remain idle or to sit back and merely criticize. Such withdrawal is justified only when we strive to realize in ourselves the higher aims of mankind. For although the sage remains distant from the turmoil of daily life, he creates incomparable human values for the future.
